The first segment shall stretch from Karachi to Rahimyar Khan (800 kms) and shall be further linked with the rest of the country up to Peshawar, through 63 cities.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the new circuit of Optical Fibre Cable was held recently at the Toll Plaza, Superhighway, Karachi. This project will facilitate long distance and international haul fibre-optic cable laying project.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Farrukh Hayat, Regional General Manager (South) of Warid Telecom said, “We are proud to be deploying a state-of-art DWDM backbone, with a self healing ring configuration for redundancy. For the first time in Pakistan, a hybrid of G652D fibers is being used to meet the exponential growing need of bandwidth in Pakistan..”

With a projected capitalization of US $200 million, Wateen Telecom plans to lay a comprehensive telecommunication’s infrastructure which include:

· International optical fibre network linking Pakistan with China, Central Asia, Afghanistan, India and Iran.

· VSAT transmission network with foot prints to cover Middle East, Asia & parts of Europe in addition to Pakistan.

· 3.5 GHz wireless access network infrastructure in selected metros to provide VOIP telephony, broadband internet and VPN/EDN solutions.

· 5,000-km wholly owned nationwide optical fibre transmission network, including optical fibre rings across the country.
